More about Jason’s Race Team

The Winter Garden Runners are one of the reasons I am so into running. They are so supportive and are all my friends! About two years ago I moved here from Ohio and began running more seriously. One runner told me “The sky is the limit for you”. Such a nice thing to say. I guess I don’t realize my own potential because of such little training I have done and able to accomplish good finish times. Anyways, myself (as an individual) and us (as a running group) are looking for sponsors. I’d love to be a part of something bigger with running too such as working for a racing organization. WGR compete/run in many races together and take plenty of pictures (via Facebook) and are sometimes included in the local newspaper “The West Orange Times”.

The Name is The Thing

Now that the Knights have won the Fiesta Bowl, will the football program be able to compete with the Gators, Seminoles and the Hurricanes for the top players in the state? The winning of a BCS Bowl on January 1, 2014 indicates that the Knights have great players. However, more than likely these players were overlooked by the Florida Big 3. Or, they developed into great players while at UCF. Take the case of star quarterback Blake Bortles, UCF was the only school that offered him an opportunity to play quarterback.

To sustain the program, the Knights will have to both compete for the high school players with greatness written all over them, plus continue to develop other recruits into top notch college players. This is a good thing because perhaps, the Florida Big 3 has forgotten how to develop players but rely on the five-star athlete to reach their potential. You see what happens when the highly recruited players don’t pan out; you have mediocre seasons like the Gators and Hurricanes.

To compete with the Big 3, the Knights must lose the name University of Central Florida. No program with a direction in its name can be taken seriously-Central Michigan, Western Illinois, Southern Mississippi, Northern Alabama, etc. These “directional” schools smack of being regional programs, not national powerhouses.

What about promoting the name “Knights”? This would have been alright if the football program had been in existence for over 70 years like the other big time programs. Now, the Knights would be over shadowed by all of the animal names; ducks, bears, tigers, bulldogs, wolverines, eagles and so on. The San Diego Zoo would be proud of all of these animals.

UCF is the name that the school should promote. These 3 letters would elevate the program above the cluster of names of other programs. There are only two big time schools that I could think of that use initials; USC (University of Southern California) and UCLA. The name UCF has already developed capital as the Fiesta Bowl TV announcers referred to it by this name. Now all the UCF publicity department, recruiters, coaches, students, alumni and fans have to do is to continue to use it. Before long, the name will catch on like wildfire and will be able to stand out among the Gators, Canes and Noles when recruiting a five-star player.

Go Knights! Oops! I mean, Go UCF!
